Army leader development is always evolving to increase effectiveness. A new Army leader development program is being introduced in 2008 to better prepare leaders for the high operational tempo that the Armed Forces are currently experiencing. This program focuses on military and civilian education, operational experiences and self-development.
With the increasing demands on the military, Army leader training is evolving to encompass training for the Army civilian corps as well as for Army Soldiers. Army civilians are finding themselves deployed more frequently and engaged in military operations more than ever before.
For this reason, it’s become critical to mission accomplishment that these civilians are competent leaders within the Army structure. Army leaders training for soldiers is also evolving to more efficiently and effectively prepare leaders for the future strategic environment.
There is no better teacher than experience. Army leader’s training is being revised based on the experiences that are being gained in Iraq and Afghanistan. As units return from combat they analyze their experiences to determine what worked and what didn’t work. The finding are then processed into changes for Army leader training plans.
True leaders must be willing to continually evaluate themselves and improve upon their weaknesses. There are several Army leader training courses in which Non-commissioned Officers, Commissioned Officers and Civilians can always strive to develop their leadership abilities. These Army leader development courses provide Army leaders with a foundation of morals, values and beliefs on which to build their individual leadership styles.
According to a 2008 Army Information Paper, Army leader’s training is now being expanded to include cross-cultural communications, language, and the ability to enable economic development, governance, and conflict resolution through negotiations.
As the Army restructures its leadership training programs, soldiers will become better prepared to face the demands of today’s Army and the Army and the Nation will benefit as lives are saved and wars are won.
